My Response to Gloria Anzaldua – towards a New Consciousness

There is a rigid division and binarism – black and white or center and margin in multi-ethnic groups. Even in the church, there is a division between Christians and non-Christians or ordained and lay people (p. 191). I think that everyone has “ethnocentrism which is the natural attitude of all cultures toward alien ones” (p. 192). However, I think that the church for God’s mission should be flexible rather than rigid to break down its ethnicity or nationalism in order to interact with other cultures and have the whole perspective and energy from synthesis (p. 209). I think that it is important for the church to think about the value of “La mestiza which is a product of the transfer of the cultural and spiritual values of one group to another” (p. 208) because if the church is restricted not to cross its boundaries, the church cannot spread the Gospel to others.
